Welcome to the Zero2Zed top 10 list, a look at the ten best, worst, middling, disappointments, best of a genre as well as a few other top ten's thrown in as well maybe even some none video gaming related top ten's on occasion. you can find the top 10 best console games of 2017 here

This next top 10 ls a look at the ten worst console releases in 2017 for a game to be eligible they must have been released in 2017 on a home console. So PS4, Xbox One, Switch and so on, if a game initially released earlier than 2017 but received a release on a console in 2017 for example a game getting a re release on the Switch, this game would be eligible. This list will be in descending order so lets get started with the 10th worst game released on console in 2017. (Please be aware for possible spoilers, I will try and only included basic information for each game)



Narrowly missed out from avoiding making it on to the list of the 10 worst games in 2017, however a slight oversight from myself and a game that did not have enough data to be ranked result in Randall making it on to the list in 10th place.

Ratings wise this game is leaps and bounds ahead of most of the other games on this list with a rating of 38.5 which is an equivalent rating of an E in the grading system

Release in 2017 for Mac, Linux, Windows and Playstation 4, Randall is a 2D scrolling action platformer developed by We The Force Studios, the game is set in a totalitarian dictatorship run by a mining company, which controls the last remaining fuel source and has enslaved much of the population using a mysterious mind control technique.

You play as Randall a gifted but slightly troubled individual who can control the minds of others using enemies against each other as you try to escape through the hoards of powerful enemies in a metroidvania style adventure.

Critically while the game did receive plenty of dismal review scores unlike many on this list it did at least have its fair share of average scores with a couple reaching and breaking the 50 barrier. With Video Chums saying the game has the makings of a decent platformer.

Sadly though the game was let down by bad dialogue, poor design choices, dull combat and serious glitching issues, the list of issues with the game goes on the more critic review you look through with shoddy writing and non existent character development two points brought up by COGconnected.

Gaming Nexus found the game to have a distinct style however the poor controls and bad combat result in a game that never feels gelled together. App Trigger found the game to be lack the variety needed, while Gamers Temple found it to be frustrating, more so than anything else the reviewer played, these are just the issues from the highest review scores for the game. I'm not even going to look at the lower scores as i would likely end up writing a small novel on all of the issues.

Dying Reborn is a first person adventure puzzle game with horror elements, which seems to be inspired by Resident Evil and the Nemesis antagonist. only major difference is Nemesis was actually scary and intimidating opposed to the fish head that is on offer here, all i get is that bad smell you get from supermarket fish counters when the fish is starting to go off.

The game is based over six chapters and follows Matthew in his search for his missing sister, of course the being a horror themed title things don't go to plan and he ends up in a dark and mysterious hotel. according to the ad blurb for the game one of the main influences for the game was the Saw film series, minus the decent first film it pretty much sums up Dying Reborn, just don't bother. 

The Zero2Zed rating system this game came in at a 35.7 which is an equivalent grade rating of an E. Breaking down the numbers the game peaked at a 50 which is a D, it also had a couple of 45s or D- grades overall though the game settled around the 30 to 35 mark which is the E grade range, with a couple of grades dropping into the F grade range with a 15 and 25 rating.

The Monster Jam series of Monster Truck driving/racing games date back to the Gamecube and PS2 era with Monster Jam: Maximum Destruction The first title to carry the Monster Jam name.

The original game in the Monster Jam series was pretty decently received by critics even receiving a 90 rating review score, over the releases though the series has slipped into the average zone for review scores, and the most recent entry has sadly slipped even further.

Releases back in 2016 on the PS4 and Xbox One, it currently sits unrated on Metacritic for the Playstation while the Xbox version sits at a fairly mediocre 36, the recent port to the Switch has not really improved things for the game.

Review scores for the Switch version are currently averaging a 35 from a total of 3 reviews with reviewers finding heaps wrong with the game, NintendoWorldReport called the game a hot mess, and a game that is coming to the e-shop in a state that is simply baffling.

Nintendo Life recommended even fans of Monster Trucks stay away from this game, with it lacking polish, has a poor presentation, poor controls, and has no semblance of progression. they were the lowest review score for the game coming in at a lowly 30.

Troll and I is a multi platform fantasy action puzzle game set in the Nordic wilderness a young by named Otto is forced to flee his home after a band of hunters ransack his village in their search for a mythical creature that is rumoured to inhabit the region.

On the run Otto inadvertently finds the creature the hunters are searching for Troll and befriends him and so starts the pairs perilous adventure together. Sounds like this will be a nice adventure through the Nordic wilderness.

Sadly this is not the case, well mostly the case, the game was not completely panned by all reviews, the Playstation 4 version was much better received than the Switch and Xbox One versions, with the PS4 version getting a few above average scores from Forbes, PlayStation Country and Video Chums. I don't know how reliable these review sources are, never heard of two of them, the other one Forbes i know for them asking people of disable their adblock and then infecting people with Malware so maybe not the best source.

Overall though the game was pretty much panned by critics with ZTGD calling the Xbox version a miserable experience, while ICXM not going as extreme called it a mess of an experience for the Xbox version as well.

The PS4 version of the game was the most reviewed of the three, it also received the two lowest review score for the game which was a depressing 10 from two review outlets, the first Playstation Universe who called the game ambitious but rubbish with flawed mechanics and story telling. 

The second 10 rated review comes from Slant Magazine, the notoriously unreliable Slant Magazine, however in this case i think they are right with their score, their review calling into question how much testing actually occurs to spot the fix the mistakes and bugs.

Which also brings into question what were the developers doing between the PS4 and Xbox One release and the Switch release in August of 2017, with the handful of reviews available showing that the game was not improved in any way. Switch Player's review calling it the worst game to grace the Nintendo Switch, while Vooks derived no enjoyment from playing the broken Troll and I.

Not a good year for Maximum Games, the publisher enters the top 10 worst console games 2017 for the second time after the dismal Troll and I, this time they have the motorbike vehicular combat game Road Rage which rates a fair chunk worse than Troll and I a game that one review called the worst on Switch.

Road Rage released on the PS4 and Xbox One as well as having PC release, the game is clearly going for an open world approach to Road Rash but failing miserably which is a shame i remember Road Rash fondly.

Set in an open world the player is free to explore and complete the games main missions or side quests these are mostly made up of standard races, time trials stunts and brawls with rival bikers using a variety of melee weapons including knives and axes your bike can also be upgraded using cash acquired from missions.

As you would expect from the sixth worst console game of the year it was critically panned in around 94.5% of critic reviews available. the one good review the game received was quite respectable a 70 from Windows Central, who called it too uneven to be a successor to Road Rash but it captures enough of the fun of motorcycle combat that made those games great.

This was the only review with any real praise for the game Xbox Tavern compared it to an early access game on Steam (which is a bit of an insult there are plenty of early access games that are decent or better on steam, maybe they meant Steam Direct) which is not what I’d expect from a full game release on the Xbox store. And it’s brown. Like, really brown. 


PSX-Sense.nl said  The story isn't interesting, the missions are frustrating, the graphics are extremely mediocre and the soundtrack's boring. While the review did praise the customisation options but still remains hard to recommend. Push Square called it a game shoddy in every single facet.

While ZTGD said the following I can’t recommend this game to anyone, not even for a cheap price because it just feels like a game that was made back in 1994, and that’s even a disservice to some of the great games released back then. i personally think the decision to go open world is what ruined it, a Road Rash game or a spiritual successor to Road Rash just doesn't need to be open world.

Although not continuous R.B.I Baseball is a long running baseball game that dates back to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) with the series making its debut in 1988.

Over the years the series has appeared on the Amiga, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Sega Game Gear and Sega 32X. More recently after the 2014 revival of the series, the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Android, iOS, Steam and Switch have seen releases of this series.

Sadly the revival has gone further and further downhill in recent years with the 2017 release receiving some stinkers when it comes to review scores, the Zero2Zed score is not much salvation for the game either with it currently sitting at a 27.6 average rating which equates to an F+ grade. For the most part the game struggles to break the 30 points mark in all but 2 of the rating brackets, another hiatus could be on the cards for R.B.I Baseball series.

Only made it into this years list thanks to a Nintendo Switch release in October. and was Probably saved from being the third worst game of 2017 by the fact that it is multi platform, but it still resulted in the game having a dismal and depressing rating of 23.2 which converts to an F in the Zero2Zed grading system.

Anyway on to the actual game, Cartoon Network Battle Crashers is a side scrolling beat em up using the various characters from the Cartoon Network owned shows such as Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, Clarence, Regular Show, Steven Universe, and Uncle Grandpa.

Developed by Magic Pockets the game originally releases on PS4 and Xbox back in 2016, back then the game was also critically panned by reviews with it currently sitting at a 21 for the Playstation version and a 25 for the Xbox version on Metacritic, although the Xbox version has no metacritic rating as so few critics could be bothered to review the game it was so bad.

Even now nearly 3 months after the release on the Switch only 3 review outlets have bothered to review this game which is a bit of a shame as currently the Switch version is the superior one with reviews scores of 30. 40 and another 40 from the three reviews on Metacritic, still not great but an improvement is an improvement

While Switch games are on this list, those are multi platform games so also appear on the XBOX and or the PS4, Vroom in the Night Sky however is a console exclusive to the Switch and earns the title of being the worst game on the Switch in 2017, and the 3rd worst game of 2017.

Vroom in the Night Sky is an action platformer where you ride around on a skooter/bike collecting things called stardust's and shooting missiles at giant circles in order to open up portals. You can also use your collected stardust's to buy a more powerful magic bike which allows you to collect stardust's more easily.

If that sounds as dull as paint drying then you are not along with this game being universally panned by critics, actually thinking about it watching paint dry does seem like a fun time compared to this game.

Back to the critics though this game failed to receive a review score higher than a 40 on Metacritic, GameRankings and Open Critic, averaging out between a 17 and 21.6 on these sites, the game also received a slew of review scores ranging from a truly dismal 10/100 and 20/100, with 73% of reviews falling into this range.

Reviews for the game having phrases such as, The dialogue might be the most atrocious I've seen to date in any game i have played (CGMagazine), or The lowest of the low, there is no potential, no skill, no depth and no talent. This game have nothing to offer the world, and will die lonely and forgotten. (Destructoid).

NintendoWorldReport summed the game up perfectly with, Vroom in the Night Sky is the epitome of a rushed launch title, a game that offers so little content that after just a few minutes you’ll have seen just about everything it has to offer.

 If you’re willing to take the time, you can dive into the game, but it comes at the cost of grinding the same few levels to unlock bikes with better stats that simply serve to make the boring stages end even quicker. If it isn’t abundantly clear yet, this is a game that every Switch owner should pass on.

I know what you are thinking, there have only been 9 games in this list and we are already at number, whoever wrote this does not know how to count, it goes 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, where the hell is number 2.

Don't worry, i can count and it is no mistake we have two games that were equally as crap as each other this year, even the extensive and highly top secret Zero2Zed scoring system could not seperate these two giant puss filled sores that have been inflicted on the gaming world.

The first of these abominations is a port of a game originally released on IOS, never player or even looked at that but if it anything to go by the Playstation 4 version that one will be shit as well. The game I'm talking about is Life of Black Tiger, if the cover next to this has not already given it away.

The game has the player controlling as you guessed it a Black Tiger who was abandoned at birth by its parents due to the way it looked. fast-forward a few years and now the fully grown Black Tiger sets out on a highly complex narrative driven story with branching conflicts and vast dialogue trees to keep the player engrossed for months, this people is the next Skyrim we are going to be playing this when we are grey and old.

Or we will be playing this game for all eternity when we all end up in hell (not real of course) visually the game looks old, it looks like a PS1/PS2 cross gen release, controls like a small aircraft carrier and costs money yes this formally free IOS game has a price tag next to its name.

The pair were completely inseparable as a result we have a tie for the crappiest game of 2017 with Life of Black Tiger and the garbage Skylight Freerange 2 Gaceduine.

Was someone at Sony high at the time when this game arrived, maybe they accidentally sniffed some glue or did it for a dare, maybe Andrew House knowing that he was going to leave Sony decided to pull a prank on everyone who knows.

Anyway to the actual goose-stepping game (that is all i see when the characters walk), this is the second entry in the Skylight Freerange RPG series, the first entry in the series missed out due to lack of data and is currently listed as unclassified so some good new for the developer.

To the actual game though, the game is, well its a... honestly i have no idea i read through the games description from the developer and all i got was a load of gibberish, with a mixture of sentences thrown together in the hope of making a coherent paragraph.

I know there is something to do with a cult in Canada, something to do with powerful biotechnology being legalized, a shadowy group called Gachduine that will make choices that will have a major effect on Nova Scotia in an open world that looks like someone puked over a computer screen and said that will do nicely. but to be brutally honest i really don't give a shit, this game is an insult to actual game developers and an insult to humanity and the universe.

While were here at the bottom of the sewer we may as well look at how the game rated, the game tied ratings wise with Life of Black Tiger with both games being critical failures and scoring next to the lowest possible rating and grade available, scoring a 10 across the board and grading at a dismal G+ across the board.
