0 to Z of Playstation 1 Games - Actua Golf 2
Actua Golf 2 also known as Fox
Sports Golf '99 in North America is a sports game focussing on Golf, the game
was developed by Gremlin Interactive for the Playstation 1 and was released in
September of 1997, there was also a Windows version of the game that was
released in the May of 1998, the PAL version of the game was self published by
Gremlin Interactive while the North American version of the game was published
by Fox Interactive, unlike the first game this game would not get a Japanese
release.
Gameplay wise the game has not really made any changes to
the formula that worked well in the original Actua Golf that released less than
a year before, the game still give you just six courses to hone your golfing
skills at with three of the courses modelled after real life courses which
includes Carnoustie.
Graphically the game still looks the same, only a few new
motion capture moments for the golfers have added to the experience with
golfers now placing the ball on the tee and shaking the putter angrily when
they miss a shot, another change to the game is the power meter which now
includes a wind meter, Peter Alliss returns in the commentary box alongside
Alex Hay.
Golf game no story present
Like the original Actua Golf reviews from the 90s are quite
hard to come by so we will be using user rating for the game from sites
IGN.com, GameFAQs.com and Gamespot.com, starting with IGN there is just the one
rating for this game with a quite poor 4.2/10 not the best source of data so
lets go to GameFAQs where 10 users have submitted ratings with an average score
of 3.15/5 with half of game ratings at either a 4 or 4.5 out of five with one
5/5 being awarded, the two users who
gave the game a 0.5/5 really did bring the average down to well average.
Gamespot have a slightly larger pool of rating for this game
with 13 in total with an average rating of 5.6, there have been some positive
rating with 3 rating the game a solid 8/10, the majority though with 6 of the
games ratings coming in at a 6/10 a couple of three’s and a four and five out
of ten helped knock the average below a 6/10.
This is the part of 0 to Z where
is visit five online retailers and see what the availability of the title is,
and what price you would be looking at if you wanted to pick this title up, the
sites that I will be using for this are Amazon.com, eStarland.com,
retrogames.co.uk and Gamedude.com I know the last one is very location specific
but from a podcast I listen to and I
have heard they have a huge stock of older games, I will also be including
Ebay.com as well
So lets get down to business with Gamedude,
like Actua Golf the second game in the series uses a different name in the US,
going by Fox Sports Golf '99 and like the
previous entry in the series it is a cheap game both trade in and buying, with
a trade in price of just 25 cents and $3 if you are in the market for a copy.
Retrogames.co.uk currently
have just one copy of the game on sale a used complete copy in excellent
condition which will set you back just £3 this is a UK and Europe version of
the game, while eStarland.com sadly do not stock a copy of the game either the
European or North American versions of the game
Amazon.com has a plentiful supply
of the North American version of the game with used copy prices starting from
$4.98 for an acceptable quality copy of the game only 60 cents more though will
get you a very good quality used copy which comes with free shipping, for a new
copy of the North American version one can be picked up for around $9 or $10
this is with the shipping added in with prices reaching a high of around the
$20 mark for a new copy.
Heading over to the co.uk site a
good quality used copy of the game with free delivery can be picked up for as
little as £1.99 while a very good quality copy can be picked up for just a few
pence more unlike the .com site there are no new copies on the market, however
a like new copy can be picked up for as little as £5.50.
Ebay.com has plenty of copies of
the North American version of the game many however have steep shipping costs
with a minimum spend for a copy of the game is around the $10 with shipping
costs over 100% of the actual price of the game
The European version of the game
is much more favourably priced with a disc only version of the game which comes
with free international shipping priced at just $1.93, while a complete copy of
the game is currently up for auction with an asking price of just $1.28 again
this comes with free international shipping, as do many of the copies on sale.
