0 to Z of Playstation 1 Games - Tōkidenshō Angel Eyes
Tōkidenshō Angel Eyes is an anime style all female
roster fighting game developed and published by Tecmo, the game was originally
released as an arcade game back in 1994 before its eventual console release on
Playstation in December of 1997 the games console release never went beyond the
Japanese market, the game would later get a PSP, Vita and PS3 release.
The game has a basic control set face buttons
control your kicking and punching with X being your light kick and Circle being
your hard kick likewise Square is a light punch and Triangle a hard punch the
player is also able to jump forward and back, guard as well as low guard and
crouch.
The game has four main modes the story mode I
will leave for the next section, the other modes are Arcade mode where the
player selects one of the eight base characters the player will have to fight
through the eight base characters before facing off against Angel who is the
final boss once completed the player is able to see the characters ending which
is made up of still images ad text.
Vs Battle is made up of either 1 or 2 players
with the two modes being 1p v 2p or 1p v Com in this mode all of the characters
can be used the players handicap can be changed and stage chosen. The final
mode is a training mode where the player is able to learn the controls the
player can also change how the test dummy for this mode acts with three options
available, stand the dummy just stands there and takes a pummelling, jump the
opponent will double jump and finally Com where the test dummy is controlled by
the computer.
The console version of the game has eight
additional characters compared to the arcade version with Akane, Bin Chibiko,
Black Raiya, Hyper Mysterious Power, Lina 2, Maria & Panda, Robo Chibiko
and Wounded Highway Star exclusive to the console version.
The story mode takes the player through each
characters individual game plots, only the eight base characters have their own
story arc with each opponent having to be beaten best 2 out 3 with a total of
five opponents to defeat. The story mode is how you unlock the hidden
characters, some characters will be switched during the course of the story for
example Marie will immediately be with Panda rather than King until the last
battle, while Mysterious Power will change into Hyper Mysterious Power before
her third fight.
This being a very early Playstation release and
a Japanese only release reviews for this game are next to impossible to find,
so we head over to GameFAQs for their user data, with the game currently
sitting on 3.77/5 from a total of 13 user ratings, a good mix of user rating
for this game predominantly rated at 3/5 or higher with a couple of users
rating the game at either a 4.5/5 or a full 5/5, a couple of users did rate the
game a 2/5 and 2.5/5 which did being down the games average.
Difficulty wise a total of 8 users rated this
with 6 of them rating the game as having just the right difficulty levels while
a couple of users rated the game on the easy side, playtime wise we have a
varied spread of play lengths with 6 users rating this category a couple
spending just four hours with the game while another spent eight hours with the
game.
A big jump up from her for the remaining three
users with a couple spending 40 hours playing this game, this however is
dwarfed by the one user who spent a total of 80 hours playing Tōkidenshō Angel
Eyes with the game averaging out at a 31 hour lifespan.
This is the part of 0
to Z where is visit four online retailers and see what the availability of the
title is, and what price you would be looking at if you wanted to pick this
title up, the sites that I will be using for this are Amazon.com,
eStarland.com, retrogames.co.uk and Gamedude.com I know the last one is very
location specific, but from a podcast I listen to, I’ve heard they have a huge
stock of older games, Ebay has now been dropped
So lets get down to
business with Gamedude who unsurprisingly along with Retrogames.co.uk and eStarland.com
do not stock this Japanese only release, also Amazon.com do not stock this game
either this includes the Japanese version of Amazon as well.
On this occasion I
will head over to Ebay.com in an attempt to find this game, and I have managed
to find one used copy of the game available, this is a complete copy of the
game in good condition which can be picked up for €64.90 which
converts to $75.45 or £57.50 in the UK, with around €10 or $11 for
shipping as well.
