0 to Z of Playstation 1 Games - Barbie Super Sports

Barbie Super Sports is the second game to feature Barbie on the Playstation, the game is a snowboarding and skating sports game developed by Runecraft and published by Mattel in North America, releasing on the 30th of December 1999. The game also released in Europe where it was published by Sony Computer Entertainment and released on the 21st of April 2000, The game also received a Windows release in North America and France.

The game has just two sports to choose from either Snowboarding or in-line skating, once decided on which sport you want to tackle first you will enter a practice area where you can get to grips with the controls and Barbie will give you advice on how to race and improve your times, tickets are earned by completing this, this tickets can be traded for better equipment, the player can play as either Barbie, Teresa, Christie and Krissy.

Movement of the character is done by either the D-Pad or left analogue stick, controls for both the snowboarding and in-line skating are pretty much identical with tricks done by pressing either the square, circle or triangle buttons, the player character can also pull off a 360 by using the R1 shoulder button, if you are not feeling that brave the L1 shoulder button can be used for a 180.

Each of the two sports have four levels to complete, with the fourth level of each discipline locked until completing the previous three in the case of in-line skating you must win a golden key at City Race, Boardwalk and Oriental Garden, once you completed these the final will be unlocked for you to compete for the grand prize.

The games snowboarding portion of the game like the skating part will set you down in a training area where you can get to grips with your board and practice tricks before you head to the slopes where you can tackle the Alpine Slalom, Balloon Run and Snowman Smash levels and retrieving the golden key from each before tackling the fourth and final level.

Reviews for this game are extremely limited with just two critic review available and both are fairly abysmal, with the game receiving a high of 30 and a low of 15. As usual though we will start with the best of them which comes from NowGamer.

NowGamer scored the game at a lowly 30 and they hated the time they spent with the game, their review concluding with the following. Let Barbie be congratulated for being the most ceaselessly happy, over enthusiastic and ear damaging collecting of plastic limbs ever to appear on the PlayStation. Lets hear it for Barbie, we hate her.

French publication Consoles Plus were the only other critic review available scoring the game at a dismal 15, with their review calling the graphics as fine and colourful as a white whale, animations that are deplorable and girlfriends that laugh like potatoes.

This is the part of 0 to Z where is visit four online retailers and see what the availability of the title is, and what price you would be looking at if you wanted to pick this title up, the sites that I will be using for this are Amazon.com, eStarland.com, retrogames.co.uk and Gamedude.com I know the last one is very location specific, but from a podcast I listen to, I’ve heard they have a huge stock of older games, Ebay has now been dropped unless the game is unavailable at other retailers.

So lets get down to business with Gamedude where this game seems pretty common, with Gamedude paying $3 if you are looking to trade in your copy of Barbie Super Sports. On the other hand if you are in the market for a copy of the game, then one can be picked up pretty cheaply at $8.

Retrogames.co.uk sadly don’t stock or list this title so we will quickly move on to eStarland.com, who currently have two copies of the game available. The first of these copies is a complete used copy which can be picked up for $12.50, the second is a new copy of the game, this copy can be picked up for $19.50.

eStarland.com also offer a trade in for the game with $5 being offered for a complete copy of the game, this price will however fluctuate if your copy is not complete, with a disc only copy of the game worth just $1.75. Copies missing a manual or box are worth $3.25 and $3.50 respectively at trade in.

Lastly we have Amazon.com where we find a decent supply of the game available with complete copies available pretty cheaply and in good or better condition with a refurbished disc copy of the game currently priced up at $5.42 once shipping has been added in with a good number of copies in good or very good quality priced between this and around the $10 mark.

If you are looking for a better quality used copy of the game there are currently two like new copies available, the first a fulfilled by Amazon copy is priced at $12.99, this copy has had a professionally resurfaced disc and comes with free shipping on orders over $25 or with prime membership. The second like new copy is priced at $13.98.

A handful of new copies are on the market as well with priced ranging from a low of around $14 at the cheapest, all the way up to the current high price of over $50, a few a competitively priced, with another couple more pricey if you don’t have prime or spend over $25.
