Random on Steam - Episode 1 - Chinese Paladin Sword and Fairy 6
Welcome to random on Steam, this will be a look
at a random game on the steam store, using a random number generator to choose
the page and the game on the selected page. The store page will be sorted by
date with the newest being on page 1, while the oldest will be on page 846 the
current highest page number as of the 1st of April 2018. This is in
no way a review of any kind and only a showcase of the various games that are
available on Steam, these could be excellent, good, average, bad or down right
abysmal games.
So to the random number generation we have page
151 and of the 25 games listed on this page we have number 10 which is, 仙劍奇俠傳六 (Chinese Paladin Sword
and Fairy 6), just goes to show how bad Steam is, this game was only released
in November of 2017 and is already on the 151st page of listings.
The Legend of Sword
and Fairy 6 also known as Chinese Paladin Sword and Fairy 6 is an RPG and the eighth entry in the Legend of Sword and
Fairy video game franchise. The game was developed by Softstar and self
published by them in Taiwan, the game was also published by Changyou for its
Chinese release. Both of these releases came on the 8th of July 2015 via
steam.
In November of 2017
the game was given English language support and released worldwide on the 17th of November 2017.
I have found the odd mention of the game possibly coming to Xbox One and PS4
but at the time of writing on the 1st of April 2018 the game is only available via Steam.
Notable people who
worked on the game, Yao Zhuangxian also known as Yao Xian or Johnson Yau is a Taiwanese video game producer who works for Softstar
Entertainment as the companies general manager. Yeo who was 26 when the first
entry in the Legend of Sword and Fairy game was released, with Yau a part of
the games development, he as remained with the series very since with the 6th main line entry
in the series releasing in 2016.
Prior to his work on
the Chinese Paladin/The Legend of Sword and
Fairy series he worked on the Richman games,
with Yeo working on Richman 2,3 and 4. The Richman series are computer based
board games similar to Monopoly but somewhat much more in depth with minigames
and a simulated stock market. Yau was the creator of the Richman series, the
series is still going strong with the latest entry in the series releasing in
2016 nearly 27 years after the first game.
The game used a duel battle system, this system
fuses both real time combat and turn based combat modes, with both modes freely
selectable by the player. The games combat features formations, with the player
only able to control one character in combat, with formations used to execute skills
to break through enemy defences or deal damange.
The player can issue commands while in combat,
these commands include things like focussed attack, priority attack and heal as
well as others. Additional combat modes are also employed by the game such as
aerial fights and ranged shooting.
If you are finding the game too difficult the
game has three difficulty levels on offer with easy, normal and hard difficulty
levels. Hard difficulty mode is however only unlocked after completing a
playthrough of the game. The option to lower the difficulty while playing is
available, but once lowered the player will not be able to re raise the
difficulty level. Also those who have lowered the difficulty will not be able
to challenge the hard final boss in their first playthrough.
The game features Exploration Jumps, these
allow the player to freely explore the map, and seek out secret areas and
paths, maps and stages are now larger with more vertical space, the game
features hidden items that the player can hunt down, these items have special
effects as well as increasing the player reputation, which can be used to
exchange costumes and titles.
Reputation is award for completing quests for
NPC’s. items that the player finds can be exchanged with the different factions
if the reputation requirements have been met. Items that are faction specific
can be exchanged with especially high levels of reputation.
Players can now transmogrify their weapons,
with players able to change the appearance of their weapons, players will be
able to change the look of their weapon to another that they own. Weapons stats
are not effected by this only the visible appearance of the weapon.
The Meridian System, each of the characters in
the game have three souls, each of which has their own different attributes. Players
are able to customize the characters by choosing different attributes in those
three souls, each node that is selected has different effects as well as
special hidden effects that can be found by selecting the right nodes.
The game also features a selection of mini
games, these are scattered throughout the game, puzzles, traps and games can be
played using character specific stage skills, with the free exploration the
player will also be able to find hidden events.
The game also features something called Stage
Skills, each of the six main characters have their own stage skills for
example, Yue Jinzhao’s stage skill is called Flight of Swords, this skill
allows Yue to fly over obstacles to reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
The minimum system requirements for the game
are either Windows 7 or 8 operationg system, and Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz
Processer, 4 GB RAM Memory, a NVidia 9800(512Mb) graphics card, DirectX version
9.0c and 20 GB of available hard drive space.
The recommended system requirements for the
game are either Windows 7 or 8 Operating System, an Intel Core i5 2.8GHz
Processor, 4 GB RAM Memory, a NVidia GeForce GTX 560 or a AMD Radeon HD 6870,
DirectX version 9.0c and 20 GB of hard drive space.
Since the Birth of the ancient god Shen Nong,
the nine springs of Jiuquan have anchored the Heavens and Earth. Each of the
Jiuquan possess supernatural powers, and each are a fountain of energy and life
for the universe.
In the War of the Three Tribes, the beasts were
defeated by the coalition of Humans and Gods. The tribe of the beasts retreated
to the Demon World and since then the Gods, Demons and Men have lived in
Isolation. After the war, Shen Nong and the Jiuquen disappeared from the world,
and as time flowed on, the legend of the Jinquen was lost.
This being a Steam released traditional gaming
reviews are impossible to find, we will be taking our usual trip to GameFAQs
for their user ratings, where we find the game currently sitting at a decent
rating of a 3/5, this however is only from one single user rating. The same
also goes for the games difficulty where we find just one user rating, this
user rates Chinese Paladin Sword and Fairy 6 as having a tough difficulty
level.
With the lack of user data from GameFAQs we
head back to Steam for the games overall rating and customer reviews, here we
find the game currently sitting at a mixed overall reception from Steam users.
Taking a closer look at the steam reviews graph we find the initial reception
of the game was overall positive with 17 positive and 13 negative upon western
release.
For the first few months after release the game
remained positively received with another 10 positive reviews from release up
to the 29th of November 2017. From December onwards up until March
of 2018 the game was received much more mixedly, with negative reviews edging
this period but only just. The game has however picked up over the last month
and has added four new positive user reviews to its tally, with positive
reviews leading 36 to 20.
This is the part of 0
to Z where is visit four online retailers and see what the availability of the
title is, and what price you would be looking at if you wanted to pick this
title up, the sites that I will be using for this are Amazon.com,
eStarland.com, retrogames.co.uk and Gamedude.com I know the last one is very
location specific, but from a podcast I listen to, I’ve heard they have a huge
stock of older games, Ebay has now been dropped unless the game is unavailable
at other retailers.
With this being a
Steam only game there the other sites like Gamedude, eStarland and Amazon are
useless, with just the steam price available. At the time of writing The Legend of Sword and Fairy 6 is priced up at £11.39 in
the UK, $14.99 in the United States, €14,99 in Euro zone countries and S$14.50 in Singapore dollars.
